What Is XGS-PON and Combo XGS-PON?

Understand the difference between GPON and XGS-PON, how Combo PON works, and why it is important for upgrading FTTH networks in Nepal.

1. What Is XGS-PON?

XGS-PON is a high-speed fiber-optic network technology that supports approximately 10 Gbps download and 10 Gbps upload over a shared Passive Optical Network (PON).

GPON vs. XGS-PON

GPON
Download: 2.5 Gbps
Upload: 1.25 Gbps
XGS-PON
Download: 10 Gbps
Upload: 10 Gbps

To connect to an XGS-PON network, the customer needs an XGS-PON-compatible ONU.

Important
A standard XGS-PON-only ONU cannot operate on a GPON-only network. An ONU must specifically support both technologies to operate on either network, subject to OLT compatibility.

2. What Is Combo XGS-PON?

Combo GPON + XGS-PON technology allows GPON and XGS-PON services to operate over the same compatible optical distribution network.

Existing customers can continue using their GPON ONUs, while new customers can connect using XGS-PON ONUs for higher-speed services.

Main Benefits

Existing GPON Support
Continue serving customers using compatible GPON ONUs.
10G Network Upgrade
Introduce XGS-PON services for customers who need higher speeds.
Shared Fiber Infrastructure
Use the same compatible optical distribution network.
Gradual Migration
Upgrade without replacing all existing GPON ONUs at once.

3. What Is New in FTTH Networking?

Combo GPON + XGS-PON is an important upgrade option for modern FTTH networks.

Internet Service Providers can continue operating existing GPON services while gradually introducing faster 10G XGS-PON connections.

GPON + XGS-PON = Practical FTTH Upgrade

Continue supporting existing GPON customers while expanding the network with XGS-PON technology.

4. Why Is Combo XGS-PON Better for Nepal?

GPON technology is already widely used by Internet Service Providers in Nepal.

For ISPs planning to introduce 10G FTTH services, a Combo GPON + XGS-PON OLT can provide a practical upgrade path.

Advantages for Nepalese ISPs

Existing Customer Support
Continue serving compatible GPON ONUs.
Reduced Upgrade Cost
Reduce the need to replace existing customer equipment.
Two PON Technologies
Support GPON and XGS-PON through compatible Combo PON ports.
Future Expansion
Introduce 10G fiber services as demand increases.
Gradual Migration
Upgrade customers in stages instead of migrating everyone at once.

D-TECH Recommendation

For ISPs in Nepal planning to upgrade from GPON to XGS-PON, we recommend considering a Combo GPON + XGS-PON OLT.

It provides a practical way to support existing GPON customers while preparing the network for higher-speed 10G services.

Before upgrading, confirm ONU compatibility, optical power budget, splitter losses, and OLT uplink capacity.
